Not everybody has religion-but everyone has a worldview
Published by dvomsteeg October 15th, 2008 in Loving Others.I thought I’d mix it up a little. Instead of reading developments from my perspective, it seemed rather appropriate to hear from our students. Since our arrival in Santa Cruz in early October, we’ve scattered students along an area called Pacific Avenue each Wednesday and Saturday nights where tons of homeless seem to congregate and pander for money.
The task is to learn about different world views while sharing a coffee or slice of pizza. Students are learning first hand about life from those with addictions, mental illnesses, and victims of abuse while attempting to steer conversations toward a spiritual bent. Not all conversations end with Jesus, but students are powerfully impacted and are having their worldviews stretched and re-defined.
Below are some excerpts taken from their bi-weekly write-ups where they are asked to debrief and process their interactions with the homeless. I’ve been astounded by their astute observations.
While I believe joy can be found in relationships with others, it is not the source of my joy … it is not focused on fickle human relationship but a steadfast and eternal Christ-centered relationship.”

“Thomas told me that he left his home because of discrimination. He thought it was wrong for his family and friends to make fun of him for befriending a Mexican or a black person. He said he would rather live on the streets [in a place] where everyone loved and accepted each other.”

“…his Aunt practiced Wicca (white magic) and taught him when he was 16. He told us many stories about the spirits he had met and seen. He said that his Aunt’s (who is now dead) spirit follows him and checks up on him from time to time.”

We have one month remaining in our time to serve and care for the broken of Santa Cruz. We pray each conversation will soften hearts, open eyes, and reveal all the more a need for a Redeemer. Please commit to praying each Wednesday and Saturday nights as lights enter a dark world.
Praying for new beginnings.
